How to Organize Your Storage Unit

organizing storage unit

Over time, disorganization and mess are bound to happen. When maintaining your storage unit isn’t a priority, a little chaos can sneak up on you.

Whether you didn’t have the chance to load your unit in an orderly manner in the first place or you’ve simply lost some ground on your storage unit organization, at Central Self Storage, we know just the trick.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step process for reorganizing your self storage unit and maximizing space.

Getting Organized

1. Pick a Day

Plan to tackle your unit clean-up project on a comfortable, clear day. Wear old clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty and bring along a truck or SUV to carry away unwanted items.

2. Empty your Storage Unit

Take out every item—you might be surprised what you find. If the area is clean and dry, you can place your items on the ground near the unit.

3. Sort Through Your Belongings

Go through everything you have in your storage unit. As you do so, place each item into one of four piles:

4. Clean Your Empty Unit

Clean your empty unit. Before placing anything back inside, sweep the floor and remove any dirt, dust, or debris from the walls.

5. Review Your Discard Pile

Take one last look at the pile of items you plan to discard. Did you eliminate enough belongings to create the room you need? If not, take another look at what you plan to keep and reprioritize. Alternatively, decide whether or not you need to switch to a larger storage unit size.

6. Repack Your Storage Unit

Your final step is to repack your unit using an organized method. Work from the back to the front, and utilize vertical space as much as possible. Place similar items together.

Be sure that lighter boxes are stacked on top of heavier ones. Carefully label any boxes containing fragile items and place them in secure locations where other items cannot accidentally fall on them or press them against the unit’s walls.

Cover furniture and electronics with blankets or sheets to prevent scratches and dust accumulation.

Keeping It That Way

One way to ensure that your unit stays under control is to maintain a constant number of items. Whenever you decide to store something new, take out something you don’t need. To make this rule easier to follow, be sure to leave some walking room inside your unit; you’ll need to be able to access the items you need as well as the ones you can live without.
